🔴 A Wild Week For Twitch - Live Success #9

☢ Twitch Goes Nuclear

On Tuesday, Twitch released a policy update banning many commonly used sponsorship styles. This led to the tweet below gathering a staggering 23,000,000 views in just 6 hours.

To make things worse, Twitch also wants to charge $25 to streamers who leave the partner or affiliate programs and have banned multistreaming on YouTube and Facebook. (More on multistreaming shortly)

The reaction, unsurprisingly, caused Twitch to make an embarrassing U-turn with this tweet just a few hours later and a follow-up tweet the day after. Amusingly, Twitter’s Community Notes feature applied a correction to the tweet.

The bigger picture: Many of you are TikTok LIVE creators or haven’t yet had a sponsorship deal and might be thinking “Why should I care?”.

A streaming platform can change the way it operates whenever it wants. If a platform does something negative, you need to be ready to react.

You should: Take two simple actions.

Start by making sure you multistream to at least two platforms at once. This playlist has all of my multistream tutorials. You can multistream for free! FWIW, I will continue streaming on Twitch and YouTube at the same time. Twitch simply doesn’t have the resources to police this new rule.

Secondly, be as platform-agnostic as you can be. This means building a community somewhere like Discord (or on a newsletter!). Also, post your content far and wide. Post your short-form video on all of TikTok, YT Shorts, and Facebook/Instagram Reels.

And speaking of platform issues…

😡 “TikTok DO BETTER”

This week I came across a remarkable and passionate rant from Jakey Boehm, a creator with over 1,200,000 followers and somebody we covered in the second edition of Live Success.

In the video, Jakey called out the lack of support that TikTok gives to streamers, explaining how TikTok stopped sleep streams because they were not “engaging or entertaining enough”.

However, he points out that he gained 1M followers in 8 months and made over $10,000 per week from sleep streams, clearly proving they were engaging.

He now claims that TikTok is restricting his views and his stream which at one time had 10,000 concurrent viewers now struggles to get 13. He says that he “brought the interactive concept to TikTok”.

He ends by calling on TikTok to do better by their creators pointing out he still gets “constant warnings, constant limits and zero support”.
