What happened at TwitchCon Rotterdam? Here's the latest

Issue #66

Hey, it’s Harry.

Welcome back to the streaming and content journey. Short and sweet today, bringing you a summary of TwitchCon Rotterdam alonsgide an update to my Live Success academy and an OBS alternative.

🟣 TwitchCon Rotterdam

Twitch is rolling out dual-format and 2K streaming to optimise the mobile viewing experience. Creators can now broadcast both horizontal and vertical layouts simultaneously, so desktop viewers see the familiar landscape format, while mobile viewers automatically receive a full-screen vertical view when they hold their device upright. This improved mobile interface also features a cleaner, customisable chat overlay, making it easier to participate in events like Hype Trains and cheer or gift during streams. Alongside dual-format, the 2K (1440p) rollout—powered by HEVC encoding—provides higher visual fidelity at lower bitrates, with automatic quality adjustments to minimise buffering. A limited closed beta for both features launches this summer, with broader access planned later in the year.

Twitch introduced new monetisation tools, including Combos and flexible gift-subs, to help more streamers make streaming a viable career. “Combos” allows viewers to rally around memorable moments by spending Bits to unlock ever-more elaborate on-screen effects, with more Combo types on the way. Meanwhile, streamer-led promotions let Partners and Affiliates split 70 promotional hours among various gift-sub events, enabling discounted sub bundles beyond the traditional SUBtember window. Later this summer, even non-Affiliated creators will gain access to select monetisation features—such as using earnings to purchase gift subs and Bits—so they can grow earnings before hitting payout thresholds. In tandem, Twitch is lowering Affiliate criteria to streamline the path to revenue for up-and-coming talent.

Twitch expanded community features with advanced clip tools, watch streaks, rewind functionality, plus broader accessibility and moderator support. Automatic clip suggestions and a less disruptive clipping flow will help creators capture and share highlight moments within minutes of a broadcast, while a new Clip Leaderboard rewards top clippers with special chat badges and viewer reactions. Watch Streaks will reward regular viewers with channel points, even allowing streak preservation via Clips or VODs if they miss a live stream. The long-awaited rewind feature lets viewers jump back to missed segments and seamlessly return to live action. On the accessibility front, a full right-to-left Arabic interface will launch this summer, and Twitch plans to double down on IRL community events worldwide. Finally, moderators gain a mobile Mod View on Android and access to the new Twitch Moderators Club on Discord, providing dedicated tools and a community hub for support and education.
