🔒 Potential TikTok Ban - What To Do

Over the past week, talk of a ban on TikTok has been heating up. I’ve seen a lot of fake news and misleading articles so let’s look at what is actually happening plus some steps you should be taking right now.

What’s Happening?

Last Thursday the United States Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously approved a bill that would ban TikTok unless the Chinese-owned company was sold within six months.

The bill still requires House, Senate and Presidential approval to become law. The House has signalled that a vote will take place this week. If the Senate and House pass the bill, President Biden says he will approve it.

What To Do

Make yourself “platform agnostic”. This means you are not too reliant on one single social media site. Own your audience.

  • Diversity your short-form content across TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels.

Yes, I said Facebook Reels. There are millions of views available there. Blue Thunder simply reposts his TikTok videos everywhere and sometimes gets 1M+ views on a Facebook Reel. Use Meta Business Suite to easily upload to both FB and Insta.

  • Multistream on at least two platforms. The most popular combination is TikTok LIVE and Twitch. Not only does this protect you from a potential TikTok ban, but it also increases your reach and chances to monetise.

You can multistream on TikTok even without a stream key. Check out five ways to simulcast.

  • Build a strong community by taking your community to a third-party platform. This typically means creating a Discord server or a newsletter. I use Beehiiv for this newsletter. It’s free up to 2.5K subs with my affiliate link.

Frequently mention your community platform whilst streaming and occasionally at the end of video content too. Only your most loyal followers will be watching the end of a long video!

My Thoughts

As somebody who has an entire YouTube channel dedicated to TikTok LIVE, I’ve been concerned about this for some time. A ban could easily wipe away a lot of my income. This is part of the reason I created the newsletter you’re reading right now. It’s also why I created my Harry’s Streaming Shortcuts second channel.

Do I think TikTok will ultimately get banned? I don’t think so. There is a risk of pissing off 170 million American TikTok users during an election year. Plus, the previous attempt to ban TikTok by Trump was blocked by the courts.

If this bill becomes law then I expect years of court action. However, I’m not a fortune teller. I could easily be wrong. Therefore, you should certainly start (or continue) your journey to being platform agnostic.
