šŸ”“ Major YouTube Updates

Plus MrBeast launches a questionable product and more!

Issue #57

Hey, itā€™s Harry.

Welcome back to another week of the streaming and content journey.

Well actually, itā€™s the same week. Just a day after I sent the last edition, a major in-person event called Made on YouTube happened and it comes with some very interesting announcements.

šŸ“° In Todayā€™s Edition

  • šŸ¤‘ New ways to make money from Shorts streaming

  • šŸ› ļø New community building tools

  • šŸš€ A tool to boost visibility for rising creators

  • šŸ˜” MrBeastā€™s new product sparks backlash

šŸ¤‘ YouTube Announces Gifts For Shorts Streamers

For YouTube, this announcement was quite far down the pecking order. For us livestreamers, this is the biggest thing announced.

Screenshot from YouTubeā€™s summary video.

Put simply, YouTube is copying the TikTok LIVE gift system. Viewers buy a virtual currency named Jewels and then spend them on gifts such as ā€œHeartsā€, ā€œFlowerā€ or ā€œThumbs Upā€. The streamer then presumably cashes out their gifts in a similar way to TikTok.

From the little footage theyā€™ve released, it really does look like a carbon copy of TikTokā€™s system and for good reason. I think this is the best donation system out there.

Thereā€™s an added benefit: YouTube will almost certainly use its standard 70/30 revenue split. This is of course better than TikTokā€™s industry-low 50/50.

Other Info

  • This is expected to launch in the US first, towards the end of this year. Iā€™ve found no info regarding a worldwide release.

  • Itā€™s likely that youā€™ll need to be in the fan funding part of the YouTube Partner Program. This means 500 subs and 3K watch hours or 3M Shorts views.

  • As ever, stay tuned to this newsletter and Iā€™ll provide more info when YouTube shares it.

My Thoughts

Firstly, do not unlist your YouTube streams. Leave your Shorts and landscape streams public and they will count towards your 3K watch hours. Regardless of whether this will be required for gifting, it will help unlock memberships and Super Chats.

Secondly, If I was starting out as a streamer in 2024, Iā€™d make sure I was on Twitch, TikTok LIVE and YouTube Shorts. For OBS, Iā€™d use Aitum Multi. For Streamlabs Iā€™d use Dual Output.

šŸ”“ What Else Was Announced?

While gifting was my highlight, there were plenty of other announcements. Iā€™ve provided a summary of the announcement blog below.

  • Dream Screen & Google DeepMind Veo Integration: Google DeepMindā€™s Veo will be integrated into YouTube Shorts, allowing creators to generate more advanced video backgrounds and standalone 6-second video clips. These AI-generated creations will be watermarked with SynthID.

  • Inspiration Tab Revamp: The Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio will get a generative AI upgrade to help creators brainstorm ideas for video content, including suggestions for video titles, thumbnails, and outlines.

  • Communities Feature Expansion: YouTube is testing expanded access to "Communities" for more channels, providing creators with a hub for fans to engage and share content. Full rollout expected in early 2025.

  • Hype Feature: A new "Hype" feature will allow fans to support rising creators by hyping videos, with top-hyped videos featured on leaderboards. Currently being tested in select countries.

  • Auto Dubbing Expansion: YouTubeā€™s automatic dubbing tool will soon support more languages (e.g., French, Italian) and a new feature will mimic the original audioā€™s tone and intonation for a more natural feel.

  • Community Hub for Comments: The YouTube Studio appā€™s Comments tab is being revamped into a Community hub with AI-enhanced reply suggestions and additional engagement tools.

  • YouTube Shopping Expansion: YouTubeā€™s Shopping affiliate program will expand to Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, enabling more creators to promote products and earn revenue.

  • Enhanced TV Experience: Improvements for YouTube on TV, including organizing content into seasons and episodes, more immersive content display, streamlined subscription options, and easier access to links.

šŸ˜” MrBeast, KSI and Logan Paul Under Fire

This week, MrBeast and his Feastables company joined forces with KSI and Logan Paulā€™s Prime company to create Lunchly, a competitor to Lunchables.

MrBeastā€™s main argument for launching the product is ā€œgiving them a higher quality version at roughly the same price is a net good imoā€. He argues that Lunchly contains fewer calories and fewer harmful nutrients compared to Lunchables.

However, many people were not happy. Minecraft veteran DanTDM accused his fellow YouTubers of ā€œselling crap to kids who donā€™t know betterā€. MrBeast acknowledged in his own post that ā€œeating fresh chicken and broccoli is healthierā€.

What do you think? Feel free to reply to this email.

Letā€™s run a little poll. Once you vote youā€™ll see the live results.

Should large creators sell products such as Lunchly to their fans?

Weekly video, post of the week and bullet point news will return in the next edition.
