🟣 Twitch Cuts 35% Of Staff

A few weeks back, Twitch cut over a third of its entire staffing roster. This amounted to over 500 people losing their jobs. So is Twitch in trouble? Let’s take a quick look.

Some Context

As CEO Dan Clancy admitted on stream, Twitch is not profitable. As an Amazon-owned company, they are now under pressure to reach profitability and be there for the “long term”. The result was the 500 job cuts alongside several layoff rounds last year.

In recent years Twitch has also been subject to complaints around their enforcement of rules. Most recently, there was some drama around streamers using black bars to imply nudity. On top of this, newer platforms like Kick have put pressure on Twitch by offering improved sub splits compared to Twitch’s 50%.

So Is Twitch In Trouble?

No.

The data does not support this. Data from Sullygnome suggests a 5% drop in hours watched when comparing 2023 with 2022. However, that is still a whopping 21.4 BILLION hours of content watched on Twitch.

Amazon simply wouldn’t want that number of hours spent on a platform they do not own. As said earlier, Amazon does want profitability. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that this means Twitch Prime subs will disappear. "It's important for us to make sure Prime still exists in some way," said Dan Clancy. Not exactly convincing.

My Thoughts

It’s a valid concern to worry about the platform you’re streaming on. Luckily there’s an easy solution and long-term readers will know what I am about to say!

Multistreaming eliminates this doubt. Simply go live on multiple streaming platforms and you get more ways to monetise, more potential reach and you don’t have to be concerned about a single platform disappearing. Here’s one of my YouTube guides.

As a final thought, I really think Twitch CEO Dan Clancy is a breath of fresh air for Twitch. When compared to Emmett Shear, the previous boss, the level of transparency is night and day. Emmett would not have dared to go live on Twitch just minutes after cutting a third of his staff.

🔔 TikFinity Adds Subscriber Emotes and Team Member Features

This week, TikFinity added additional features around subscriber emotes and the team member system.

For example, on the Sound Alerts page, you can now play a sound when a viewer types a specific subscriber emote. You can also do this via the Actions & Events page to get even more complex.

The TTS Chat pages gets a buff too. You can configure how many top gifters can use text-to-speech as well as now allowing access to team members of a specified level. A few weeks ago Zerody (the owner) also added numerous fun TTS voices including Ghostface!

Plus, I have just released my 2024 TikFinity guide which you can check out below. Use TikFinity to get more engagement in your livestreams. The guide includes TTS, Sound Alerts and sub, follow, gift and like alerts.
