🔴 Elon Enters The Streaming Game

Welcome back to another week of the streaming and content journey.

I’m always on the lookout for new streaming platforms. In this week’s edition, I’ve (kinda) found two. One is rather bigger than the other!

🔴 X Officially Enters The Streaming Wars

Last week, Twitter/X officially joined the streaming wars, announcing a roster of over 20 streamers who will stream non-exclusively on the platform.

Twitter’s Plan

The roster spans quite a diverse set of streamers, from professional players to chess players to programmers.

The promise is “Whatever feedback they have, we will build it”. Nate Mcgrady is leading the company's efforts. However, I’ve not seen many other staff involved, which raises the question of how quickly they can introduce any updates. Elon Musk reportedly cut over 80% of Twitter staff.

Will It Work?

Given that X reportedly has over 500M monthly users, there is huge potential here. However, that comes with two huge caveats.

Firstly, they need to massively improve the discoverability of livestreams. Better notifications, more streams appearing in the For You feed and a Twitch-like browse section would be a good start.

Secondly, the core feature set needs to improve. For example, people report that their application to get a sub button has been pending for 18 months. There is no donation system similar to Twitch bits or TikTok LIVE gifts and no alert platforms like Streamlabs or TikFinity that support it yet. The UI is also poor.

Closing Thoughts

It should be noted for the sake of truthfulness that livestreaming on X is not new. It’s been possible since Twitter purchased Periscope way back in 2015. Sadly though, they pretty much neglected it.

With all of this said, first movers advantage is a real thing in the world of content and streaming. If X really does “build it” when it comes to feedback then they could be a serious player within a few years.

It goes without saying that some people will be uncomfortable streaming on X due to the political views of its owner. Much like many people will not stream on Kick or Rumble. That’s an ethical choice for you and I’m not here to decide for you.

One of the reasons I think I was able to become a full time creator is because I always wanted to learn more about livestreaming and content creation.

2. Colin and Samir - In depth interviews with a massive range of creators. From MrBeast right down to much smaller creators. Nobody interviews creators better.

3. Jon Youshaei - I say nobody, but Jon is pretty close. More great interviews with creators.

• Twitch bans waiting rooms. This was usually other streamers watching another channel without adding value.

• Multiple YouTube streamers including DrLupo and TimTheTatman announce the end of their exclusive contracts and a switch to multistreaming.

• Elon Musk asks pro VALORANT player Demon1 for advice about improving X livestreaming.

• TikTok LIVE Studio has introduced several updates, including an extended chat, source duplication, and a renamed "Dual layout" for clarity. These are solid improvements overall.
